An individual who contaminated sweets with sedative and provided them to minors at a summer camp in the area has admitted sexual offences against two children aged nine and ten years old.

The accused was arrested after eight youngsters and one adult became sick at the facility in mid-summer.

The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a total of 17 charges when he was present at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Yet, he refused to admit a single sexual charge he was facing, which was concerning a young boy.

Ruben was kept in jail before a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, outlined the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.

She stated his targets were disadvantaged youngsters who were staying at a youth camp which he ran.

The man engaged in a "candy game" with the minors, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and request they to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She told the court Ruben had conducted this practice with the children "repeatedly", and children had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She said the defendant had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had worries in summer 2025.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "This year his family member had suspicions about the activities, justifiably.

"They decided to examine in the man's possessions."

The legal counsel stated items including baby oil, petroleum jelly and syringes were discovered, and his family member alerted the police about his worries.

She stated the man went on to play the "sweet game" with six children that evening - July 26th - and they were everyone unwell the subsequent day.

"The police had not responded by that point," she added.

The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, had stated that it was investigating law enforcement's management of the events.

The legal representative explained the youngsters were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so the stepson notified the police once more.

She said Ruben then played the "treat game" in a space of five youngsters.
