Security Guidance for Defence Personnel

In a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in China-made cars.

The minister explained that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a issue in every contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

This announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

The broader defence situation highlights the importance of robust measures and vigilance in all aspects of government activities, including vehicle usage to communication practices.
